Births and deaths in fluid chaos

The movie below shows the velocity field of the fluid evolving over time. The arrows indicate the velocity vectors at some points in the fluid, and how they change over time. Blue areas indicate the presence of vortices turning in a clockwise direction, and red areas those turning in an anti-clockwise direction. The vortices are wandering around in an irregular way.
