Win cold hard cash and bring mathematics to the people by entering the
2003 science writing competition run by the Times Higher Education
Supplement (THES) and the Oxford University Press (OUP).
To enter, you need to write a popular science article, no longer than
3,000 words, aimed at a non-specialist
audience. The winner will receive £2,000 cash and a copy of the Oxford
English Dictionary (OED) on CD, and have their article published in the
THES. Second prize is the twenty-volume set of the OED, and third
prize is £200 worth of popular science books from OUP.
Plus published the 1999 winning entry, "Self-similar
syncopations" by Kevin Jones, which investigated the links between
music and mathematics, throwing in limericks, Fibonacci and Scott
Joplin along the way.
You can write on any area of science, but Plus is hoping for
another mathematical winner. You can find out more information at the
competition
website. The closing date is June 30. Good luck!
