Very interesting. I always thought lambda was strictly appropriate only in a difference equation, which \[ N(t) = {\rm constant} \times e^{\lambda t} \] is clearly not, so that this equation should really contain 'r' and that 'r' should be the instantaneous rate of increase and not a rate over a finite time period.
