    • Experience life as a mathematician!

      7 February, 2023

What does life after a maths degree look like? If you're studying at the University of Cambridge you can find out by applying for a summer internship with the Cambridge Mathematics Placements programme (CMP), which allows you experience work as a mathematician in industry or research, or the Summer Research in Maths (SRIM), which allows you to work on a project within the Faculty of Mathematics.

And there's opportunities if you are studying at another university too. The Philippa Fawcett programme is for women and non-binary students who are studying at any university in the UK or abroad (including the University of Cambridge), and the Cambridge Mathematics Open Internships are open to students from another university in the UK.

To get an idea of what these experiences are like we bring you interviews with two former interns, as well as Tamara Grossmann who played an instrumental role in setting up the Philippa Fawcett internship programme. These internships were funded by the Centre for the Mathematics of Information in Healthcare Hub and the Cantab Capital Institute for the Mathematics of Information. For information on how to apply, see here.

Mathematical snapshots: Emma Beniston — Find out about Emma's work researching the influenza A virus at the Addenbrooke's site as part of a team in the lab.

Mathematical snapshots: Daniel Kaddaj — Daniel tells us about what drew him to maths, statistics, and random walks on unusual shapes.

Mathematical snapshots: Tamara Grossmann — Tamara tells us about her work in image analysis, a typical day as a researcher, and her role in encouraging more women and non-binary people into the field.

Welcome to the first Philippa Fawcett interns — Find out more about the Philippa Fawcett internship programme in our article published the website of the Mathematics Faculty of the University of Cambridge

Building bridges with industry — Find out more about the Cambridge Mathematics Placements programme in our article published on the website of the Mathematics Faculty of the University of Cambridge.
