This summer we were lucky enough to attend the ninth European Congress of Mathematics (ECM) in Seville, Spain, with kind support from the London Mathematical Society. Over 1300 participants gathered in this beautiful Spanish city to learn about the latest exciting advances of maths.

The ECM is organised by the European Mathematical Society (EMS) and takes place every four years at different locations in Europe. A highlight at each ECM is the award of prestigious Prizes from the European Mathematical Society. Ten of these (the EMS Prizes) are are bestowed on mathematicians under the age of 35 in "recognition of exceptional contributions to mathematics".

While we at the ECM we had a chance to meet some of these prize winners and produced articles as well as podcasts about their work. You can see them all below and we will add further content as it is published — enjoy!

      The Euromaths podcast series

Euromaths: Giovanni Forni — Join us for a game of mathematical billiards with Giovanni Forni, an invited speaker at the ECM.

Euromaths: Jessica Fintzen — In this episode of our podcast Jessica Fintzen, winner of a prestigious EMS Prize, tells us about maths of symmetry, how to capture infinitely many snowflakes at the same time, representation theory, and why she likes doing handstands.

Euromaths: Richard Montomery — Montgomery won an EMS Prize for work on objects so ubiquitous in everyday life it's easy to forget they're mathematical: networks. Find out more in this episode of our podcast. You may also want to read this accompanying article.

Euromaths: Avi Wigderson — Should we allow mathematical proofs to contain errors? We find out from Avi Wigderson, winner of an Abel Prize, in this episode of our podcast recorded at the ECM.

We celebrated the run-up to the ECM 2024 by revisiting some of our interviews with former EMS Prize winners who went on to win a prestigious Fields Medal.

Euromaths: Maryna Viazovska — Maryna won a Fields Medal in 2022 and an EMS Prize in 2020. In this episode she talks to us about packing spheres in many dimensions.

Euromaths: James Maynard — James won a Fields Medal in 2022 and an EMS Prize in 2016. He tells us about one of the biggest open problems in number theory: the twin prime conjecture.

Euromaths: Hugo Duminil-Cupon — Hugo won a Fields Medal in 2022 and an EMS Prize in 2016. He explains his contributions to the theory of phase transitions in statistical physics.

Euromaths: Artur Avila — Artur won a Fields Medal in 2014 and an EMS Prize in 2008. He tells us how to tame chaos.

Euromaths: Alessio Figalli — Alessio won a Fields Medal in 2018 and an EMS Prize in 2012. He helps us explore the theory of optimal transport.

      Articles

EMS Prize winner Tom Hutchcroft — Tom won an EMS prize for work on mathematical models that describe intriguing phenomena called phase transitions.

EMS Prize winner Frederick Manners — Frederick won an EMS prize for, among other things, a problem involving pyjamas.
